You’re a Toyota fan. You head down to the dealership to get yourself the most powerful model in the portfolio, expecting to be greeted by a spicy sports car. No such luck. The dealer presents you with a 4.5 litre V8 D-4D Land Cruiser. An SUV. What’s more, a diesel SUV. At 272 BHP, the Land Cruiser takes top spot in the German Toyota range.

Let’s look for a moment at the weakest of the strongest. Here we find the 1.6 litre petrol engine fitted to the Granta and Kalina, churning out 87 BHP. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Ferrari F12 tdf with 780 BHP and 705 Nm. Hybrid models top both the Mitsubishi and Volvo portfolios, with the Outlander and the XC90.
